So i thought i would take a break after writing 400 of the 1500 words i have to write for this essay to tell you about the plays i'm writing about. I chose a question about politics of 1990s plays and the "in yer face" generation of theatre. if you dont know what that is...hes a brief outline: sex, violence and swearing and lots and lots and lots of it. so here goes a little about them...if any of my fellow thespians stumble across this.
Phaedra's love- Sarah Kane - women has daughter. king has son. women marries king. king sleeps with womens daughter. leaves. women is obsessed with kings son. performs oral sex on him. hates him. kills herself and says she was raped. son imprisoned. king rapes daughter and kills her. king kills son. sees he has killed daughter. king kills himself, thee end. IT IS GODDAMN WEIRD. i am pretty sure its a modern telling of some Greek tragedy though so i'm not THAT surprised.

Blasted - Sarah Kane- starts of pretty naturalistic. ex soldier man and women go into a hotel. naturalistic conversations. he tries having his wicked way it fails? they have sandwiches she gets excited because there are cheese ones. shes a vegetarian i think. more naturalistic sexual tension and a few thrown in uncomfortable racial slurs are thrown in to emphasis the society and character i think. it would seem that they wake up after having sex and it goes down hill. attempted rape? civil wars broken out? some soldier comes in and rapes the man. a baby dies. a baby is eaten. it gets crazy pretty fast like i said.

FINALLY - Shopping and F**cking - Mark Ravenhill
Characters are pop stars of the 90's Mark, Robbie, Lulu, Gary and Brian. Mark robbie and gary are all gay. pretty sure brians a drug lord. Mark is a recovering addict. opening scene has him throwing up on stage. garys a young prostitute ( i wont tell you how young) and robbie and lulu become phone sex workers, drug dealers and shoplifters with an obsession for ready meals. theres sexual abuse. crude language. you know just what you expect from the 90's...i guess.
Heres a few clips so you get a better idea of just what the hell im talking about. needless to say these 90's writers has something to say and they sure as hell were not afraid to say it.
